Seven Ethiopian Opposition Parties are Merged as one, Dr. Birhanu Nega selected as a Leader
The seven known Ethiopian parties have now merged into one party. The name of their new party is called “Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice Party”.
The merged parties are:
- All Ethiopian Democratic Party (AEDP)
- Ginbot 7
- Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP)
- Semayawi Party
- Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ)
- Gambella Regional Movement (GRM), and
- New Generation Party (NGP)
It was announced that the name of the new party is called “Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice Party”, and the former leader of Ginbot 7 party, Dr. Berhanu Nega has received 912 votes which will make him on the top leadership position in the new party, so he was elected as a leader. The leader of Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ), Andualem Arage was elected as a deputy leader of the new party.
Andualem was sentenced to a life sentence on terrorism charges after being imprisoned on September 14, 2011, along with prominent journalist Eskinder Nega and opposition party members and reporters.
Also, Yeshiwas Assefa, who is the member of Semayawi party was elected as Chairperson by 722 votes and Chane Kebede, who was a member of Ethiopian Democratic Party was elected as Deputy Chairperson.
The new party has assigned its separate role for the selected leaders. So it is also expected Dr. Berhanu Nega and Andualem Arage are expected to play a major role for the next election. Yeshiwas and Chane (PHD) are also expected to control the internal structure of this new party.
